This is not the first time that a major service like Whatsapp is out of service. It also happened on March 12 2019 when Gmail and many Google services were also down.
This time was facebook and many of it services like Whatsapp, Messenger and Instagram.
According to Margi Murphy from the telegraph, facebook said:
“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have trouble accessing some Facebook services. We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

What we don't realize is that little by little services like Facebook, Google, Cloudflare, etc are becoming indispensable, essential and necessary for the well functioning of society in many levels.
For example, In a big scale, It also happened not long ago when Cloudflare went down and half of the internet was also inoperative, being one of the biggest DNS / CDN providers in the world.
But it also affects in a smaller scale in the social level, many small and even medium size businesses use whatsapp and messenger to communicate with their customers, even to receive orders, when whatsapp went down, all this businesses stop operating as there were no clients contacting them.
This is when we need to think and evaluate how society is becoming so dependent of these service and in which way we need to start decentralizing them.
As we have mentioned above, this is not the first time that happens, and it will continue to happen, according to theverge.com "Facebook Messenger and Instagram DMs went down back in December. Facebook and Instagram also experienced big outages over Thanksgiving in 2019."
